Education Secretary wil accept a ‘No’ vote –‘for the time being’

The agreement on the Independence Referendum is that both the pro-independence and the pro-union sides will accept as final ‘the sovereign will of the Scottish people’ on the issue, as expressed through the ballot box.

Ten days or so ago, Education Secretary, Michael Russell, MSP for the Argyll and Bute constituency, was speaking at a ‘Yes’ campaign meeting in Craignure Village Hall n the Isle of Mull.

Mr Russell gave what is described as ‘an impassioned plea for a ‘Yes’ vote in the referendum, saying:

‘This is your last chance to vote for independence’.

A member of the audience has told us: ‘I asked him after the meeting whether this statement meant that the SNP would accept the result of the vote if it was ‘No’?

‘His reply was that he would accept the result ‘for the time being’.

‘Of course this means that if we vote ‘No’ the SNP plan to give us another chance to vote in the future, so it isn’t really our last chance.’

This will be a timely reassurance for many ‘Yes’ voters including, reputedly, some SNP members – who have been chewing the cud after the collapse of the indy case under Alastair Darling’s interrogation during his debate with Alex Salmond on Tuesday night.

Those who are privately worried about the security of their savings, their mortgages, their pensions and their businesses in an unknown currency situation for some time after 18th September will have some respite from getting the message that they do not have to support the current misaligned effort – under the threat of no future opportunity.
